With its sun-soaked beaches, citrus groves, whitewashed villages and cluster of harbour and marinas, the southern coast of Spain embodies everything that’s quintessentially Spanish – all amidst the glorious Mediterranean climate. Little wonder then that it remains one of the country’s most desired areas…

Costa Blanca
Taking its name from the abundance of endless sandy beaches, the Costa Blanca – or ‘White Coast’ – falls into two halves. In the relatively green and mountainous north, picture-postcard villages sit high on hillsides surrounded by citrus groves, olive trees and vineyards. To the drier south lie equally stunning beaches, colourful marinas, and promenades lined with palm, pine and eucalyptus trees.

Blessed with more than 320 days of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 22 degrees, the region is considered by the World Health Organisation to have one of the healthiest climates, with beneficial effects for those suffering from asthma, rheumatism, arthritis and heart-related conditions.

Costa Calida
Sheltered by rugged mountains and high hills, Costa Calida is famed for its exceptionally mild temperatures, hence its name the ‘Warm Coast’. Stretching some 250km, the region begins at El Mojon, a charming fishing village with a superb beach, and extends to the old Roman fishing port of Aguilas.

On the area of land between the two you’ll find all manner of things to see and do: the pink flamingos of the Regional Park of Las Salinas, the open-area mud baths of Lo Pagan, the ruins of Velez Castle in the town of Mazarrón. Not forgetting early morning fish markets, splendid beaches, landscaped gardens and the many sites of historical interest.

Murcia
Nestled between the mountains of the Sierra de Orihuela and the Cresta de Gallo, Murcia is a land of contrasts. On the one hand it has retained much of its historical past: small medieval towns, market gardens, stunning architecture and a treasure trove of cathedrals, monuments and museums. On the other, it offers a lively lifestyle: bustling plazas, excellent tapas, boutiques, bars and restaurants, watersports, to name just a few.

Perhaps its most famous attractions however, are the Mar Menor or ‘Little Sea’ – Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon – and La Manga del Mar Manor, a 22km-long stretch of beach and clear waters that is a haven for sun-seekers.

Costa del Sol
‘Something for everyone’ is a much-used phrase, but the Costa del Sol – or ‘Coast of the Sun’ – is one location that really lives up to the promise. Enduringly popular with young and old alike, it is both cosmopolitan in parts and laid-back, lively and low-key, crowded and remote.

Traditionally a region of fishing villages, the Costa del Sol has over recent decades been transformed into a year-round destination. In summer, visitors come for the golden sands, wealth of watersports, hill-walking and renowned nightlife; in winter, to play the region’s many world-class golf courses in dry, sunny weather.
